President's Message
Welcome to this Newsletter of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick Inc.
 
Our club has been serving the local and international community since 1948. It is part of Rotary International - a worldwide organisation of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders whose members provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. As signified by the motto "Service above Self", Rotary's main objective is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.
 
Rotary promotes the ideal of service through fellowship. Attending our meetings allows members to enjoy the fellowship of other club members, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.
 
As a Club we are fortunate in have a steady source of income from our collection bins at Sydney Airport, allowing us to support a wide range of local and international projects. We are particularly focused on the Rotary projects, Australian Rotary Health, Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) and Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) as well as The Rotary Foundation.
 
All are very welcome to any of our meetings in 2023.

Next Meeting - 12 April 2023

There will be no meeting at the Graphic Arts Club on this occasion.  Instead, we will enjoy a night of fun and frivolity, and maybe some serious ten-pin bowling!

Appetisers of pizza breads will be followed by ordering and paying for your meals at the Bistro of the Newport Hotel from 6.30pm.  The bowling will start afterwards upstairs around 8pm.
 
Cost of the Pizza Breads and two games including shoe hire is $30.00 PP.
 
Non-bowling Rotarians and guests are welcome to dine at the Bistro and cheer on the bowlers at no charge. 
Our last meeting
 
 ‘Auntie’ Barb Welcomed all present to Country, with her personal messaging encompassing sisterhood with reference to the recent Harmony Day and International Women’s Day.
 
Dan Allison, Rotary Club Maroubra, introduced Dan Wolody, President of the Ukrainian Council of NSW and Treasurer of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations. 
 
Dan commenced by backgrounding the Ukraine war, which started in 2014 in Crimea.  Eastern Ukraine has received the majority of the Russian invasion effort to date, with Western Ukraine continuing to function relatively unimpeded. Of the 40M population an estimated 12.8M are displaced. Rotary Australia has raised $1M principally through our RAWCS funding critical lifesaving medical kits, an ongoing need. Funds are steered through the Australian Federation of Ukraine Organisations, whose current priority is to find and develop appropriate emergency dormitories to house an estimated 20,000 disabled persons (DPP).  They have currently housed 8650 at a cost of $2.57M, or $200 per head, in the Ukraine.
 
Dan has been involved in Sydney providing accommodation and resources for 5,600 refugees and lobbying the federal government to provide Entry Visa’s to all refugees, which allows access to Social Services and Pension eligibility. Through the Sydney Community Foundation he has been able to access two coordinators to assist supporting the refugees.
 
Dan then introduced Loredana, CEO Sydney Community Foundation. Collective giving by individuals, foundations and corporates across the city has enabled the foundation to share more than $12 million in grants and funding for grassroots Sydney charities and their impactful programs.  The changemakers they fund know their communities and their needs.
 
Sydney Community Foundation has funded the two Ukraine coordinators, and currently has raised $63K and is looking to raise $70K to fund two additional co-ordinator roles for an additional 12mths.

ROMAC Baby - Melenaite from Tonga
Baby Melenaite was born with a large teratoma, a mass of tissue and blood vessels, on her lower back. 
 
Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) arranged for her and her mum Michelle to fly to Canberra, where the 2.5kg tumour was removed.  Unfortunately, some remnants remained and she was transferred to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick for further treatment.  They have been living at Ronald McDonald House and members of our Club have been supporting them during their stay.
 
On 2 March Melenaite underwent 5 hours of surgery.  Firstly an operation by Urologist Dr Sarah Guitronich to address the kidney issue.  Then followed a 4-hour operation by Neurologist Dr Saeed Kohan to excise the remaining teratoma. 
 
The very good news is that, after 9 months of treatment at The Canberra Hospital and Sydney Children's Hospital, Melenaite has been cleared to return home to her family in Tonga in time for Easter.

April - Maternal & Child Health Month

Rotary International's theme for April is Maternal and Child Health!
 

Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation.

 

To help reduce this rate, Rotary provides immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improves access to essential medical services, and supports trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Rotary’s projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs.

 

Maternal and Child Health Care is also recognized as one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus.
