President's Message
A Year of Service, Energy and Connection
I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our Changeover Celebration. It was wonderful to see so many members, partners, friends and supporters come together to celebrate another successful year of Rotary service and to recognise the outstanding leadership of outgoing President Simon van Wyk.
As we begin a new Rotary year, I am both honoured and excited to serve as President of the Rotary Club of Botany Randwick. I also welcome our Directors and Board members into their respective roles and thank them for their commitment to helping lead our club forward.
Our vision for the year is simple: to build an engaged, vibrant and sustainable club that continues Rotary’s proud legacy of serving our local community while creating meaningful opportunities for fellowship, leadership and personal growth. Through strong partnerships with organisations such as PCYC, Sydney Airport, A21, Blue Dragon and our local schools and community groups, we will continue to make a positive and lasting impact.
Rotary has always been about people. The success of our club will not be measured by the Board alone, but by the engagement and participation of every member. Whether you attend meetings, support projects, mentor others or simply lend a helping hand, you are part of our success.
I am incredibly energised about the year ahead and look forward to working alongside each of you as we continue to live Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self. Together, we can achieve great things for our community and strengthen the friendships that make Rotary so special.
Our next meeting, on 29 July has been rescheduled from the 22 July so that we can welcome a very special guest, Vi, the Co-CEO of the Blue Dragon Foundation, a child support initiative that our club has been supporting for nearly 20 years. From small beginnings, they now have over 150 front line staff.
Blue Dragon helps children and young people in crisis situations: slavery, homelessness, and extreme poverty. They rescue people from danger, then work with them for the long-term so they can heal from trauma, injustice and disadvantage. All that they learn on the frontline is used in advocacy to improve laws and policies protecting the vulnerable.
Vi will bring us up to date on current Blue Dragon activities, particularly those related to child trafficking.
Our last meeting - 8 July
Our last meeting, our annual Changeover night saw the baton of leadership pass from Simon to Mark. A great night, very well attended by members, family and friends!
Past President Simon was recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow, presented by the incoming District Governor, Shane Burette.
A special guest was Sari-Elle Kraemer, President of Coogee Lions Club, with President Mark handing over 7 suitcases full of spectacles from the Airport's Lost and Found collection. Lions have a project that recyles these spectacles, so are an ideal partner.

Rotary International focuses on reducing maternal and child mortality by providing high-quality healthcare, education, and preventive services to vulnerable populations worldwide. Each year, millions of mothers and children die from preventable causes such as malnutrition, poor sanitation, and lack of access to medical care. Rotary addresses these challenges through sustainable, community-based solutions that empower local populations to take control of their health.
Key Programs and Strategies
Community Health Worker Training: Rotary strengthens local health systems by training community health workers in countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Zambia.
Vaccination Campaigns: Rotary members work to immunize children in remote areas, ensuring sustainable vaccine delivery.
Maternal Waiting Homes and Mobile Clinics: Safe residences near hospitals and mobile health units provide prenatal care, immunizations, and basic medical services to mothers in underserved regions.
Midwife and Healthcare Worker Education: Training programs improve delivery safety and maternal outcomes.
Nutrition, Hygiene, and Family Planning Education: Programs teach breastfeeding, child nutrition, sanitation, and reproductive health, including access to modern contraception.
Cervical Cancer Prevention: Rotary collaborates with health ministries to improve screening and HPV vaccination protocols.
